BACKGROUND
After having thoroughly reviewed H.R. 218, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (now
public law 108-277) and the new changes to the AZPOST (Arizona Peace Officer
Standards Training) courses of fire for the state of Arizona, a few things have become evident:
Per H.R. 218:
- The only legal LEOSA qualification is one that is administered, certified, applied for, and issued in the state in which you presently reside
- The only legal course of fire that meets the requirements for the state of Arizona
- LEOSA certification is the AZPOST course of fire
- As of January 2024, this AZPOST course of fire now consists of and requires:
a. 40-Shot Daytime Semi-Automatic Qualification Course
b. Target Identification and Discrimination Course
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
- The ONLY state in which you can receive a LEOSA certification is the state in which you presently reside
- The ONLY course of fire that satisfies the requirement for the issuance of an Arizona LEOSA certificate is the 40-Shot Daytime Semi-Automatic Qualification Course with the Target Identification and Discrimination Course included. These must be passed consecutively in one sitting. This is now the ONLY course of fire Prescott Shooting Range will administer.
Now that the course of fire now includes a movement element that cannot be done within one of our bays, we now need to schedule and hold these starting outside of our regular business hours.
OUR RECOMMENDATION
The 40-Shot Daytime Semi-Automatic Qualification Course is a scored course of fire with a minimum required passing score. ALL phases have required time standards; there are no makeups for missed shots, shots that you failed to fire, or shots that fell outside of the time limit.
For this reason, we highly encourage you to practice shooting prior to the course of fire and review and practice the course of fire prior to your testing day to ensure the greatest likelihood of passing on the first try.
You will be held to the letter of the law regarding the requirements as listed for the course of fire and the course of fire will be administered as described. Any failure to meet time, accuracy, safety, or any other standards as described in the course of fire will be accounted for accordingly and may result in a failure to pass the course of fire. Any instructor who signs off on a LEOSA certification that the applicant has failed to pass is falsifying a federal certification and could be charged with a felony for such actions. Failure to pass, withdrawing from a partially completed course of fire, choosing to reshoot at another date or time, or failure to show up to a scheduled course of fire will result in your paying for an additional appointment and rescheduling for another date.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
- Closed-toed shoes and no large open-collared shirts
- A sturdy belt to support your holster
- An inside or outside the waistband hip holster which protects the trigger guard
- Outside-the-waistband holsters are recommended
- SERPA holsters, small-of-the-back, appendix, and shoulder holsters are not allowed due to range policy
